The past 10 days have been very difficult for us. It started when Robin, a sweet boy rat, developed an abscess. He was rushed to the vet for diagnosis and underwent surgery the same day.He made it through the surgery and appeared to be on the road to recovery when he took a turn for the worse and passed away. Robin leaves behind his buddy Batman, who we are sure misses him very much.
On Saturday we had to urgently rush bunny Summer to the vet after a neighbouring foster rabbit broke into her area and the two bunnies fought. She had a bite on her head, half of her whiskers torn off, and a large chunk of skin ripped off her hind leg.Summer underwent surgery to repair her wounds. (Thank you Dr. Caudle of Princess Animal Hospital for coming in on his day off to help Summer). Summer is doing well but had to undergo surgery again on Monday after her leg wound reopened.
Last night Lexi, a special-needs bunny who has been in the rescue since 2010, became very ill. She didn’t want to eat her dinner, but seemed to be perking up after receiving some pain medication and food supplement. Sadly she went downhill very quickly and passed away on the way to the emergency vet. Lexi was bonded to her sister Lucy, who is missing her tremendously today.
Needless to say our hearts have taken a big hit…and so has our bank account. These emergencies cost more than $1,600 – a very large unexpected amount to deal with, as we are in the process of spaying/neutering all the bunnies that came to us following an OSPCA seizure a few weeks ago.
